Find your style

Why creators should adopt art styles instead of niches and how to find yours.

Hey passionate creator,

You can recognise a Vincent van Gogh painting by his use of bold, expressive brush strokes. You know when Lady Gaga is on the red carpet by her avant-garde outfits - who can forget that meat dress? And you know when you’re watching a Tim Burton movie because of his gothic cinematography.

Even without a name, you know who painted this.

You don’t need to see their name. You can immediately recognise their work by their signature style.

As creators, we tend to categorise ourselves by niche. But there are plenty of creators in the finance, productivity, or even gardening niche. It's difficult to stand out when positioning yourself by your niche alone, especially when audiences are quickly scrolling through TikTok videos without looking at the creator’s name. That's why it might be time to draw inspiration from the art world and adopt their concept of an art style.

An art style is the distinct combination of techniques and processes that artists use over the course of their career. It's an expression that evolves and matures as the artist does.

I’ve constantly been experimenting with my YouTube videos. I’ve had a lot of fun doing this and I’ve learnt a lot, but my channel views aren’t consistent. I always thought this was because I don’t have a clear niche, but maybe it’s because I haven’t developed a clear style. As a result, my audience never knows what to expect when I upload my next video.

I’ve been exploring ways to develop my own style so that my videos are more recognisable. And if you want to do the same, here are the questions you need to ask yourself:

  • What platforms and content-forms do you want to be known for?

  • What themes and subjects do you want to explore?

  • What type of language do you want to use? Descriptive or technical? Friendly or formal?

  • What energy do you want to bring into your content? Will it be upbeat and cheerful, or calm and thoughtful?

  • What colours do you want to use?

  • What are your interests outside of being a creator? Can you incorporate them into your content to make your content more unique?

  • What key messages and values do you want to share? Are there any key phrases, words, or slogans you could become known for?

  • What do you want too see more of in your content? Notice the elements of your content that make you feel most alive and excited.

  • What do you want to see less of in your content? Maybe there’s things that you add because you feel like you need to e.g. for me this is listicles in my YouTube videos.

Making your mark isn’t about getting inspiration from others and doing the same as them. It's about forging your own path and showing the world your take on things. So, instead of blending in, be a true artist by developing a style of your own.
